Key Stage 3

Year 7 and 8

Pupils in Year 7 and 8 follow the KS3 National Curriculum and programme of study including English, mathematics, science, languages, humanities, technology, the arts and physical education.  The school firmly believes that important skills in literacy and numeracy further allow pupils to access the wider curriculum.  Pupils entering the school with below national standards in reading, writing and mathematics receive an additional two hours per week of basic skills intervention which continues into Year 8.  This is instead of studying a modern foreign language.  Literacy development is further supported through humanities lessons.  In Year 7 for mathematics, opportunities for ‘Saturday School’ tutor sessions and in-school small group intervention are available for identified pupils.  The aim of Intervention at Key Stage 3 is to close the gap between pupils and provide them with the foundations in literacy and numeracy needed to access the Key Stage 4 curriculum.
