Key Stage 4 Humanities
Pupils studying history will develop and extend their understanding of three key eras:
- Medieval (500-1500)
- Early Modern (1450-1750)
- Modern (1700-present day)
They will investigate three time scales:
- Short (depth study) – A detailed investigate of a specific place and time, such as Germany 1933 -1945 or America 1789-1900.
- Medium (period study) – The study of an era, such as the Elizabethans.
- Long (thematic study) – A wider investigation of a theme such as medicine and health through time.
Students will study international and national history but also local history through a field visit.
Pupils studying Geography will develop and extend their understanding in the following areas:
- Locational Knowledge- Students will extend their knowledge of knowledge of the world’s continents, countries, regions and their physical, environmental and human features.
- Maps, fieldwork and geographical skills – Students will use a range of maps, atlases, Ordnance Survey maps, satellite imagery and other graphic and digital materials in their work. Pupils will also be given opportunities to collect, interpret and analyse data using a range of techniques both in the classroom and through fieldwork. They will also develop an enquiring approach to their study by asking their own questions and planning their own sequences of investigation.
- Geography of the UK - Knowledge and understanding of the UK’s geography, to include its physical and human landscapes, environmental challenges and changing economy and society.
- Physical Geography – Students will explore how geomorphic processes such as Volcanic Eruptions, River Processes and Glaciers shape the land and their effect on people. They study the causes and effects of our changing weather and climate and our responses to these.
- Environmental Geography – Students will study large scale global ecosystems such as rainforests and deserts our management and use of them in order to obtain food, energy and water.
- Human Geography – Students will study some of the World’s major cities including reasons for their growth and challenges facing cities in both rich and poor countries. They will also look at differences in the development of countries considering reasons for differences in wealth, population and industry and trade.
GCSE Religious Studies
- Develop their knowledge and understanding of two world religions including scripture and sacred texts.
- Apply their knowledge to demonstrate understanding of the influence of religion on individuals, communities and societies.
- Understand how views and opinions in the modern world vary and the role that religion can play in this.
- Consider and analyse questions relating to religious beliefs, values and practices.
- Gain experience of constructing well informed and balanced arguments on values and beliefs. How will I be assessed? This GCSE qualification is 100% examination sat at the end of Year 11.
- 50% of the qualification will focus on the ‘study of religion: the beliefs, teachings and practices in relation to two religions’. This will include studying religious buildings, festivals, services and books.
- 50% of the qualification will involve ‘religious, philosophical and ethical studies in the modern world’, such as views on abortion, euthanasia and poverty.
