Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-Up Premium

In this academic year Hillcrest School received £17000 for Year 7 pupils who arrived in September 2015 below a Level 4 in English or Maths. All Pupils below a Level 4 in English all receive Literacy Lessons in addition to their English lessons. This is a bespoke pathway and the intervention focuses on accelerating pupils’ skills in reading, writing and spelling accuracy. A key focus of this is ‘Fresh Start’ which is a phonics based spelling programme. Pupils eligible for catch-up funding made an average improvement of 1.5 sub-levels of progress in English from SATs score by March 2016. In addition the vast majority of pupils eligible for this funding have improved their spelling accuracy and reading ages since baseline assessments in September 2015.

Year 7 pupils entering below a Level 4 in Maths have also all been provided with intervention to support progress in maths. This intervention is either in the form of a place at Hillcrest’s Saturday School or maths booster classes which are in addition to their allocation of maths lessons. On average these pupils had made an average improvement of 1.3 sub-levels of progress in Mathematics from SATs scores by March 2016.
